Overview: An introduction to winter hillwalking,  learning all the essential skills under expert tuition from Gary Hodgson of Tarmachan Mountaineering.

This full day walk is aimed at the summer hillwalker who wishes to progress onto winter hillwalking for the first time. It is a perfect course for complete novices to winter. A general level of fitness and some experience of summer hillwalking is required.

This will be a great opportunity to get advice, ask questions, enhance your winter knowledge and practice some winter skills during the day. Some of the topics covered during the walk will be:
• Kit check
• Weather/avalanche forecasts
• Route choice and decision making
• Navigation
• Winter skills

Location: The hills around Glenshee area.

Overview: An introduction to walking with snowshoes, learning all the essential skills under the expert tuition of Gary Hodgson, Tarmachan Mountaineering.

This full day out on the hills is aimed at the beginner who wishes to learn how to walk with snowshoes. A general level of fitness and some experience of summer hillwalking are required. Some winter hill walking is desirable. This is a guided trek with instruction along the way.

During the day we aim to cover the following skills:
• Kit check, fitting snowshoes
• Weather and avalanche forecasts
• Planning a route around weather/snow
• Knowing the limitations of snowshoes on differing slope angles/snow conditions
• Avalanche awareness
• Travelling on snowshoes and gaining a Munro summit, or two!

Overview: Phil Glennie is a qualified Winter Mountain Leader, senior first aid instructor and a long-serving member of Braemar MRT. This course will get you thinking of how to respond to first aid matters in a remote, mountain environment. There will be lots of practical advice such as first aid kit recommendations, emergency procedures and common accidents.

Avalanche awareness for tourers and free riders with SAIS – Full Day

Overview: This course will act as an introduction to avalanche awareness for ski tourers and free riders looking to travel beyond the patrolled ski areas. The course will be delivered by Paul Noble who is a senior avalanche forecaster with the Scottish Avalanche Information Service. The course will cover many practical topics including:

  • How to use the Snow and Avalanche Foundation of Scotland (SAFOS) Be Avalanche Aware Guidelines.
  • Detailed understanding of the Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) avalanche forecast and application of this knowledge.
  • An understanding of British mountain weather forecasts and application of this knowledge.
  • Route planning and terrain selection during a journey with interpretation of contours for avalanche terrain and hazard identification.
  • Observation and evaluation of avalanche risk when touring and skiing on the hill in both ascent and descent.
  • Snowpack observation and analysis.
  • Safe travel techniques on mountainous terrain.
  • Avalanche safety equipment & how to use it.
  • Companion rescue.

The course may require a single uplift ticket to access terrain beyond Glenshee Ski Area. Participants will need to be prepared for a full day on the hill.

If participants have the following equipment: avalanche transceiver, shovel, avalanche probe – please bring them. If they don’t have these items of equipment they will be provided free of charge by SAIS.

Overview: This is a full day hill walk in the Cairngorms under the expert guidance of Gary Hodgson of Tarmachan Mountaineering. Participants should have a good level of fitness and stamina and be comfortable with mountain walking for 7 hours or more. Some previous hill walking experience and exposure to Scottish mountain weather is required.

Gary will pick the best route options and navigate your walk, allowing you to enjoy the views, scenery and mountain wildlife. This will be a perfect opportunity to get advice, ask questions, enhance your winter knowledge and practice some winter skills during the day.
