Dorrik Stow is Professor of Geoscience at the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society of Heriot-Watt University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (Edinburgh) and formerly Director of the Institute of Petroleum Engineering.
He is a geologist and oceanographer and world-renowned for his prolific work on deep ocean sediments and processes, now numbering over 300 scientific publications. In pursuit of this research, he has sailed on all the world’s major oceans, and visited or worked in more than 50 countries.
He is much sought-after for lectures around the world on these topics and on their relevance to the climate, energy and society. He is also an enthusiastic proponent of popularising his science through talks, articles, books and TV/radio broadcasts. His recent books include Encyclopedia of the Oceans, Vanished Ocean, and Oceans: A Very Short Introduction, all with Oxford University Press.
